What is Neuro Rehab?
A physiotherapist who specialises in Neuro Rehab has developed their skills in the treatment of movement problems related to the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS uses specific pathways and mechanisms for coordinating and controlling how we move. When the central nervous system is injured through disease processes, trauma or accident, there can be problems with movement control. A neurophysio will specifically assess the individual's movement problems and through a carefully devised treatment plan aim to restore more efficient movement and improved function.
Some of the common neurological conditions which physiotherapists treat are:
- Stroke
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Parkinsons Disease
- Brain injury
- Spinal Cord Injury
- Cerebral Palsy
- Sub-arachnoid Haemorrhage (bleed on the brain)
- Cancerous tumours affecting the brain or spinal cord or peripheral nerves
- Motor Neurone Disease (MND)
- Degenerative neuromuscular conditions (atrophy's)
- Post-polio syndrome
- Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)
And many, many more. If you are unsure as to whether you may benefit from an assessment by the physiotherapist, you could always telephone me for an informal chat and advice.
